Mechanics note 03

Volatility describes a pattern, not your next spin.

It is a long-run description of how variable the outcomes are. The category does not provide a countdown to a win or predict a short session.

Two contrasting abstract curves showing different patterns of variation

Low and high are relative labels

Lower volatility

Commonly associated with smaller, more frequent prizes and a narrower spread of results.

Higher volatility

Commonly associated with larger, rarer prizes and a wider spread of results.

The boundary between categories is not universal. A provider may use its own scale or omit the label. The game mathematics matter more than the marketing badge.

RTP answers a different question

Theoretical return to player is a designed average over a very large number of game rounds. It is not the amount a person should expect back in one visit, hour or balance. A short run can sit far from the theoretical average.

Neither measure is a safety promise.

RTP and volatility describe game mathematics. They do not remove financial risk or make continued play a recovery plan.

Keep the two ideas separate

RTP
Long-run average return built into the game design.
Volatility
How widely and irregularly outcomes are distributed.
Session result
An individual, highly variable outcome that neither label forecasts.
